On February 21, 2024 it was my great pleasure to officially launch the Coolum and North Shore Coast Care’s Asparagus Assassin (AA) Project. The launch took place at Tasman Trespasser Park, Marcus Beach.

It was inspiring to see the dedication of this group in protecting our coastal environment and underscores the significance of collaborative efforts between local government, community organisations, and individuals.

The Asparagus Assassin was invented by Ron Gooch, a Peregian Beach Bushcarer, and promises to revolutionise weed management practices by significantly increasing efficiency in removing the invasive asparagus fern.

Bushcarers have long declared a war on the weeds that are negatively affecting our ecosystems. The Asparagus Fern is one such weed, and its spread is particularly difficult to control. It produces red berries which attract birds, who in turn spread the seeds far and wide via their droppings. If left unchecked it not only smothers native flora, but reduces habitat for fauna. Often seen in planter boxes and gardens, the thorny plant is now listed under the Biosecurity Act as a “Category 3 Restricted Invasive Plant”.

Development Support from Noosa Council and our Community Bank

After working on a number of prototypes, Ron developed the Asparagus Assassin, which has been used in the Peregian Beach Community Association’s weeding precinct. To help more communities to have access to the Asparagus Assassin, he sought support from Noosa Council and, as well, was awarded a $3000 grant from Bendigo Community Bank Marcoola to purchase more AA tools. Now a “Roving Weeders” program has been set up share the use of AAs with other bushcare groups in the Noosa Shire, with Marcus Beach Bushcare Association being the first.

The Asparagus Assassin Project represents is a great example of addressing environmental challenges at the local level, and demonstrating the effectiveness of grassroots initiatives in safeguarding natural environments for future generations.
